The After the Bell program in Canada is a unique initiative that works to provide access to nutritious food for children from low-income families. Since 2015, Food Banks Canada’s #AftertheBellProgram has been providing nutritious, child-friendly food packs to children who experience food insecurity during the summer months when school meal programs aren’t available.
They deliver food packs to participating food banks in 200 communities across Canada each containing healthy, kid-friendly foods. These food packs are carefully assembled with nutritious, shelf stable items like hummus, crackers, oatmeal, and sunflower seeds. Local food banks then supplement with fresh items like apples, cheese, milk, yogurt, and other nutrient dense foods.
1 in 6 children in Canada live in food insecure households. Food companies and grocery outlets can help by providing discounted or free food. Food Banks Canada’s goal is to deliver 185,000 healthy food packs to children in need this summer. McLean Meats is proud to support this important project.
“We are so grateful for the support McLean Meats has provided the Food Banks Canada After the Bell program. I’m so pleased to be able to include your product in our packs and so appreciate your generosity in helping me make this happen!”

People can donate money to local food banks and other charities that support the After the Bell program. Alternatively, they can volunteer their time or skills to help with food distribution, meal preparation or fundraising efforts. Businesses and corporations can provide donations or discounted/free products for program participants as well as financial contributions.
Finally, those with a platform or influence can raise awareness about the program and the issues it seeks to address. By doing so, we can help others understand the struggles of food insecurity in Canada and how we can help make a difference.
